Unfortunately, must have fallen from the nest and a person's cat got it. By the time I got it, the neck which had been either bitten or clawed by the cat, had swollen up like a balloon and I was advised to cut a tiny hole to allow the poisonous gas out. It was fairly nerve wracking doing this but was told the bird would die without me doing this. I did it, the gas escaped and I bathed the area with colloidal silver and worried all night long. However, at 6 am the bird was alive albeit rather sore but is eating. I am hopeful that this bird may live. It is very little though - probably about 5 days old. Poor picture of it but my arms weren't long enough :)
Also got in today a tiny little sparrow that had fallen from nest and been on the ground for a while. It is eating but just keeping an eye on its breathing for the moment.
Goodness you were brave to cut that hole, well done! I do hope it survives and the little Sparrow also.
ReplyDeleteHow busy you are at the moment and how sensible of Millie to take refuge in the aviary again :)
So sorry that Ralph isn't recovering too well, I hope he improves.
Hi ShySongbird,
ReplyDeleteLittle sparrow didn't survive I am sorry to say. Think it may have fallen from a big height and been out overnight on the ground. Poor wee thing. The tui is doing just fine though :)
Millie has been out in the wild for 10 days now but still comes for food when she sees me. She is doing well and eventually will go wild but am pleased she knows I will feed her,
Bit of improvement in Ralph's leg now... he isn't favouring it quite so badly so I am hopeful. Perhaps another month in the aviary will see him get the strength back. Here's hoping!
I found a little Tui on a path this past
ReplyDeleteSunday. It had closed eyes and was hardly moving. Took it back home, made a nest and kept it in a warming drawer and fed it a mash of cat food, boiled egg and insects. It was touch and go the first night, but it seemed to be a lot better the next day, and was cheeping and moving about the box, and keen to eat more. We rang bird rescue and the lady picked it up - but am very sad to report that she advised that it had died a day later, owing she said to internal injuries from falling from the nest. Well that is of course possible, but it did not square with the little bird's improvement with us - so I just have to wonder. I felt it had probably turned the corner and if we had kept it, would still have been alive. Very sad.
Hello, sorry to hear about the tui but it is always a bit touch and go with these young ones.
ReplyDeleteIf you get another tui chick, mash banana with orange juice and a bit of baby farex and using a fine artist paintbrush, when it gapes put the food down its throat. Insects are good also but if you can't find any, a bit of chef jellimeat will do.... give this separately to the bird. Sorry about your one.
